Per no repetir un nom de lloc, moltes vegades es recorre a un sinònim o coreferent, que s'escriu amb majúscula inicial:
la Ciutat Comtal [Barcelona]
el Nou Món [Amèrica]
el Viejo Continente [Europa]
el Mare Nostrum [mar Mediterrània]
the Big Apple [Nova York]
the Pond [oceà Atlàntic]
